GMetrics

User-Friendly Dashboard for Game Analytics

OVERVIEW

With millions of players worldwide, game companies need a way to understand player behaviors in order to enhance their game experience. A Player Analytics Dashboard is essential for any successful mobile game. With the analytics tool, game developers and product managers can make informed decisions based on valuable insights and measurable goals.

Problems

  • Complex interface causes difficulties in gaining comprehensive insights into monetization metrics and player behaviors

  • Using various applications to communicate outside of the platform reduces team efficiency

Challenge

Determine crucial features for game analysis and understand the needs of target users

My Role

UI UX Design, User Research, Visual Design, Prototype

SOLUTION OVERVIEW

Onboarding

Interesting onboarding process provides entertaining data-analyzing data experience

Dashboard Overview

Clear dashboard with various features where managers and developers could easily analyze data or customize their boards

Engaging Communication

Integrating messages and notifications provides better communication within the platform, increasing team efficiency

RESEARCH

To empathize with target users, I conducted interviews with game developers and product managers to find out their pain points regarding analyzing player behaviors.

From the interview, I was able to determine the primary and secondary key performance metrics. I also clarified the different uses of graphs, crucial features and additional information for an intuitive dashboard.

DEFINE

Based on the research insights, I developed personas to better focus on user pain points.

Persona - Game Developer

Persona - Product Manager

User Stories

As a [description of user], I want [functionality], so that [benefit].

“As a game developer for multiple projects, I want to easily read through player retention rate, daily active users and player churn rate so that I can quickly and accurately analyze player behavior and optimize game performance.”

Olivia the Game Developer

“As a busy product manager, I want to clearly view revenue, lifetime value and conversion rate, so that I can efficiently make data-driven decisions and explain actionable plans with my director and game developers.”

Peter the Product Manager

HMW

How might we design a player analytics dashboard for game developers and product managers to identify actionable insights and optimize player engagement and retention?

OPPORTUNITY

What if we can help product managers and game developers save time identifying actionable insights by organizing data visualization on dashboards?

EXPLORATION

After brainstorming ideas and creating initial wireframes with user pain points in mind, I ran some user testings, helping refine the design.
(Due to time restrictions, this project only focuses on the dashboard interface)

  1. Users think date pickers are more helpful when analyzing a specific metric in detail instead of an overall dashboard

  2. In an overall dashboard, users tend to look at the visualizations by day

  3. Instead of a general retention, users find that a specific retention (e.g., average first-day retention) is more useful

  4. Some users also note that they sometimes try to see the average when analyzing and comparing retention

VISUAL STYLE

Since the target users belong to the B2B category, I chose a simpler and cleaner style, ensuring managers and developers could smoothly interact with the interface, easily view insights and effortlessly share ideas.

PROTOTYPE

The final prototype includes micro interactions, desktop onboarding and mobile onboarding process.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, the designing of the player analytics dashboard represents a significant step towards informed decision-making in game optimization. With the focus on simplifying data visualization, the dashboard allows product managers and game developers to translate complicated data into actionable insights.

By integrating the key metrics such as daily active users, first-day retention, revenue, conversion rate, lifetime value, and churn rate, the dashboard provides a comprehensive overview of player engagement and business performance.

Takeaways

  • If there were more time, I would further develop the mobile version of the dashboard design

  • Keeping up with new technology, such as the new Figma Variables, helps in creating adaptive and customizable designs

  • Micro-interactions and user confirmations increase user engagement, ensuring that each click or action feels intuitive and purposeful
